His strengths include streamlining operations, driving business growth and leading strategic development to leverage existing and emerging technology.

Wheeler began his career as a software developer at HCSC (a $56 billion parent company of five Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans) and progressed steadily through management. Wheeler held many leadership positions before becoming the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, where he was responsible for managing a $756 million IT budget and creating enterprise-wide technology strategies and standards.

Wheeler later became the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Lifetime Health Care Companies, the largest health insurance company in upstate New York, where he turned around the company’s IT operations and successfully prepared for the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  In 2014, Wheeler joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) as the Senior Vice President and CIO.  He led the strategic development and ongoing IT operations, serving more than 5.8 million members. At BCBSM, Wheeler was responsible for a $320 million annual IT budget and more than 2,000 employees. He implemented several turnaround programs including a program that reduced the IT budget by $31 million in his first full year with the company.

Wheeler received a B.S. of Computer Science from Northern Illinois University and an M.B.A from the University of Notre Dame. He has also given back to the community in various ways. To date, he has served as a Southside Little League coach, is a fellow at Leadership Greater Chicago, serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Northern Illinois University, and offers The Wheeler & Sharon Coleman Family Scholarship at Trinity United Church of Christ.
